Simpson is the son of Eunice, a hospital administrator, and Jimmy Lee Simpson, a cook, and bank custodian. Simpson was born in San Francisco, California, and raised there throughout his childhood. His mother was a famous drag queen in the San Francisco Bay Area, and his father followed in his footsteps. Jimmy Simpson came out as gay later in his life, but he passed away in 1986 due to complications from AIDS.

His maternal grandparents were born in Louisiana, and Simpson’s aunt gave him the name Orenthal, which she explained was taken from a French actress that she admired.
