Baker Mayfield’s Net Worth: Biography

Baker Mayfield’s net worth starts with his great beginning. Mayfield was the younger of the two sons that James and Gina Mayfield welcomed into the world on April 14, 1995 in the city of Austin, Texas. During the senior year of his younger son’s high school, James, who works as a consultant for private equity, ran into some financial troubles. Due to the difficulties they were experiencing, the Mayfields were forced to sell their family home and migrate from one rental property to another.

Mayfield grew up supporting the Oklahoma Sooners, and as a youngster, he attended a couple of their games. James spent three years playing football for the University of Houston, but he never got a letter thanking him for his work.

Mayfield was the starting quarterback for the football team representing Lake Travis High School in Austin. The Cavaliers played football. He led Lake Travis to a total 25-2 record over the course of two seasons, including the 2011 4A State Championship. He finished with a total of 6,255 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, and eight interceptions after his high school football career. Mayfield was only offered scholarships by Florida Atlantic, New Mexico, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston State, and Wyoming. However, he received preferred walk-on offers from Baylor, Texas Tech, and Washington State. Mayfield was rated as a 3-star recruit and received light recruitment.

Baker Mayfield’s Net Worth: Career

Baker Mayfield’s net worth continues with his great career start. Mayfield was selected the starting quarterback for Texas Tech College just prior to the beginning of the 2013 season. This was due to a back injury sustained by Michael Brewer, who had been anticipated to start the season and was a previous quarterback for Lake Travis. Mayfield is the only quarterback in FBS history to start a season opening at the position of true freshman after having participated in the walk-on program.

Mayfield completed passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns in his debut game, which was played against SMU. His 43 completions out of 60 attempts broke a school record that was previously set by Billy Joe Tolliver. He also came within four completions of breaking the single-game record for most completions by a freshman in NCAA Division I FBS, which was previously held by Luke McCown. Mayfield was the first freshman Texas Tech quarterback to be selected Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week since the Red Raiders’ former head coach Kliff Kingsbury in 1999. Mayfield received this honor due to his performance and was named Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Mayfield, Garrett Gilbert, Michael Brewer, and Collin Lagasse were the last four former Lake Travis quarterbacks to compete in the game, and they were spread out over both teams.

Mayfield’s 780 season yards and seven touchdowns have already surpassed the 755 season yards and six touchdowns that Texas Tech’s previous true freshman quarterback, Aaron Keesee, accumulated in 10 games for the Red Raiders. Mayfield’s accomplishments came after the Red Raiders’ second victory over Stephen F. Austin. Mayfield concluded the season with 2,315 yards on 218 of 340 completions, 12 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. This was despite the fact that he suffered a knee injury and lost his starting spot to fellow true freshman Davis Webb.

Mayfield was honored as the Big 12 Conference Freshman Offensive Player of the Year for the 2013 season, and he was named one of the 10 semifinalists for the Burlsworth Trophy in November. The Burlsworth Trophy award is presented annually to the player who is deemed to be the best in all of Division I football who began his college career as a walk-on. Mayfield stated that he would be quitting the program because of “miscommunication” with the coaching staff. This was the reason given.

Mayfield had been playing for Texas Tech when he decided to transfer to the University of Oklahoma in January of 2014. However, he did not get in touch with the Sooners coaching staff before making the move. Mayfield went on to expand in an interview with ESPN about why he wanted to move schools. He stated that he felt he had earned the starting job and that further competition was not “actually fair.” Mayfield also stated that he was concerned about losing his scholarship. The allegations about scholarship difficulties were refuted by Kliff Kingsbury, the head coach at Texas Tech.

In February of 2014, the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, Bob Stoops, stated unequivocally that Mayfield will be a walk-on for the team. Mayfield was found not eligible to play until the 2015 football season, and he lost a season of eligibility due to the transfer regulations of the Big 12 Conference following a failed appeal of his transfer limitations.

After Mayfield prevailed in a duel against Trevor Knight to determine who would start at quarterback for the Sooners, the team announced on August 24, 2015 that Mayfield will take over the position. Mayfield was given the starting nod in the game against Akron on September 6, 2015. In the victory by a score of 41 to 3, Mayfield threw for a total of 388 yards and three touchdowns while completing 23 of his passes. Mayfield was given the starting position for Tennessee’s matchup at Neyland Stadium in the second game of the 2015 season.

The Volunteers were ranked 23rd at the time, while the Sooners held the 19th spot in the rankings. Mayfield got out to a very sluggish start in the game, and they did not even reach midfield until 13 minutes had passed in the fourth quarter. After trailing by 17 points for most of the game, Oklahoma overcame that deficit to come back and win the game in the last minutes in double overtime by a score of 31–24. Mayfield finished the game with 19 completions, which led to 187 passing yards and three touchdowns, despite the fact that he started the game by throwing two interceptions. Mayfield got the starting nod for the game against Tulsa, which was the third game of the season. His career-best performance included passing for 487 yards and four touchdowns, with 316 of those yards coming in the first half of the game. During the 52–38 victory, Mayfield also rushed for 85 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Mayfield concluded the season with 3,700 passing yards, 36 touchdown passes, and seven interceptions, a resume that catapulted him to the fourth spot in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. Mayfield was an integral part of Oklahoma’s run to the Orange Bowl in 2015, which was the semifinal game for the College Football Playoff that year. On the other hand, Oklahoma was defeated by Clemson with a score of 37–17.

Mayfield began the 2016 campaign with a loss to #15 Houston by a score of 33–23, but he completed passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns. The victory, by a score of 45–40, came about as a result of his 390 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and two interception throws in the game against Texas on October 8. Mayfield had a historic clash against Patrick Mahomes, who will go on to play quarterback in the NFL, on October 22. The game was a victory for Texas Tech, 66–59, and Mayfield threw for 545 yards and seven touchdowns. In a contest that shattered multiple single-game passing records, Mahomes threw for 734 yards and five touchdowns in addition to Mayfield’s totals. Mayfield’s performance was also impressive. Mayfield finished the regular season with a total of 1,321 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, and three interceptions, in addition to three running touchdowns. In the final five games of the season, Mayfield also rushed for three touchdowns. The Sooners were victorious in all five of their contests.

Mayfield and Dede Westbrook, his top receiving target, were both named as Heisman Trophy finalists in December of 2016, when it was confirmed that the competition would take place. Additionally, it was disclosed that they would participate in the Sugar Bowl in 2017. Mayfield ultimately came in third place in the vote for the Heisman Trophy.

Mayfield was a key figure in Oklahoma’s victory over Auburn in the Sugar Bowl in 2017, which the Sooners won 35–19. At the end of the game, he finished with 19 completions out of 28 attempts for 296 yards passing and two touchdowns, which earned him the game’s Most Valuable Player title.

After the Sooners’ victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on September 9, 2017, in Columbus, Mayfield planted the Sooners’ flag in the midst of the painted “O” at Ohio Stadium, which resulted in a significant amount of reaction from the general public. Mayfield quickly issued an apology in response to the incident.

In a game against Oklahoma State, Mayfield’s team’s in-state rival, on November 4, 2017, Mayfield threw for a school record 598 yards. Mayfield finished the game with a completion percentage of 24.36, accumulating five passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown for Oklahoma, who went on to win the game 62–52. Mayfield finished his career with a perfect record of 3-0 as the starting quarterback for Oklahoma in the Bedlam Series.

In November of 2017, Mayfield found himself in hot water once more after an incident that occurred during a game versus Kansas. Mayfield was observed grasping his crotch while yelling “F- you!” at the coach of the opposition team as they passed each other on the field. Additionally, he instructed their audience to “Go cheer on basketball.” Mayfield responded to the criticism by issuing a second public apology. Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley made the announcement several days after the team’s 41–3 victory against Kansas that quarterback Baker Mayfield would not start the following game against West Virginia and would not be the captain of the team due to his actions against Kansas.

Mayfield led Oklahoma to its third consecutive Big 12 championship on December 2, 2017, when the Big 12 Championship Game was played again after a hiatus of six years. This is one of the things has added to Baker Mayfield’s net worth. Oklahoma won the championship by defeating TCU Horned Frogs by a score of 41–17. Mayfield was awarded Most Valuable Player honors, and Oklahoma was able to clinch a spot in the playoff rounds for the second time in the last three seasons. One month later, in the 2018 Rose Bowl, which served as the national semifinal game, the Sooners suffered a defeat at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs by a score of 54–48.

Mayfield was declared the winner of the Heisman Trophy on December 9, 2017, with an overwhelming majority of votes. He garnered a total of 732 votes for first place and 2,398 points. This sum was equivalent to 86% of the total points attainable, which is the third highest percentage in the history of the Heisman Trophy. Mayfield also made history by being the first and only walk-on player in the history of the Heisman Trophy to win it.

Mayfield appealed to the NCAA to be permitted to be eligible to play right away at Oklahoma when he transferred from Texas Tech to Oklahoma after his freshman year on the grounds that he was a walk-on rather than a scholarship player at Texas Tech and that, as a result, the transfer rules that apply to scholarship players should not apply to his situation. Mayfield argued that because he was not a scholarship player at Texas Tech, the transfer rules that apply to scholarship players should not be applicable to his situation. The NCAA did not grant his appeal since he did not fulfill all of the requirements. The regulations of the Big 12 Conference dictate that intra-conference transfers will result in a loss of one year of eligibility in addition to the year-long suspension mandated by the NCAA for such moves. Mayfield made an attempt to appeal the first loss of his eligibility to the faculty athletics representatives of the Big 12 Conference in September 2014, but his appeal was dismissed.

The officials from Oklahoma petitioned the officials from Texas Tech to authorize Mayfield’s immediate eligibility, but the officials at Texas Tech opposed and denied the request before finally giving a release in July of 2014. As a result, Mayfield had no choice but to sit out the 2014 season, and as a result, he also lost one year of eligibility because the rules mandated it.

The faculty athletic representatives of the Big 12 voted against a rule proposal on June 1, 2016, that would have enabled walk-on players to transfer within the conference without losing a year of eligibility. The rule proposal was revised the following day to allow walk-on athletes to transfer within the league without losing a season of eligibility if they do not have a written scholarship offer from the institution they are transferring from. This change took effect the following day. The updated plan was adopted by a vote of 7 to 3 by the representatives of the faculty athletic teams. Due to the modification to the regulation, Mayfield is now qualified to play for Oklahoma until the 2017 season. The rule was approved by the student body at Texas Tech.

On July 6, 2022, Mayfield was sent from the Cleveland Browns to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional fifth-round selection pick in 2024. Mayfield battled it out with Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback position with the team. On the 22nd of August, 2022, the Panthers announced that they will be starting Mayfield against the Browns in their opening game of the season.

Life and Relationships

Mayfield was taken into custody on February 25, 2017, in Washington County, Arkansas, on accusations of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, escaping and evading arrest, and disorderly behavior in a public place. On the Saturday in question, at 2:29 a.m., a police officer was summoned in response to an allegation of assault and battery. Mayfield was the target of ranting from the individual who flagged down the police officer.

Mayfield was unable to walk in a straight line, his speech was slurred, and there was food on his shirt, according to the preliminary report written by the police. Mayfield started yelling profanities and “making a commotion” when he was requested to stay so the police could gather a statement from him. On April 7, he was scheduled to appear in court for the charge of public intoxication; but he denied all of the allegations brought against him.
